Treat Your Dog to Natural Flea Control with Garlic and Brewer’s Yeast

If you were to ask dog owners what the most useful new dog product to come out over the past ten years has been, a large number would probably name a popular topical monthly flea treatment brand. Prior to BioSpot, Frontline and Advantage, fleas really were a lot more challenging to control. Dog owners had to rely on shampoos, dips, sprays and collars in various combinations. Once a month treatments are undoubtedly easy and highly effective, but are they for every one?

Some dog owners simply do not like applying chemical products to their pets. They are concerned about what synthetic pesticides might be doing to their dog and other family members as well as the environment. Other owners are convinced monthly flea treatments are safe, but find their high cost hard to handle. In a few cases, dogs are simply allergic or too sensitive for topical flea treatments to be used.

Regardless of why owners seek an alternative to monthly flea treatments, there are plenty of other natural options available. Two of the most popular are garlic and Brewer’s Yeast supplements that can help control fleas without the use of synthetic pesticides.

Garlic

Back in the day before there were commercial flea products, one of the most common natural remedies dog owners used to help keep fleas at bay was garlic. How does garlic work to eliminate fleas? Fleas seem to hate the taste of it. Dogs generally like the taste of garlic and it is commonly added as a flavor enhancer to dog treats and foods.

If you are thinking of trying garlic as a flea repellent, avoid the temptation to feed your dog raw garlic and never give it to your cat. It does contain a substance that at high levels can be toxic or harmful to dogs. Poisoning your dog with a “natural” flea remedy is obviously something you want to avoid. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a garlic flea product that is safe for your dog. There are a variety of garlic based supplements you can choose from.

Brewer’s Yeast

Brewer’s Yeast is another traditional natural flea treatment. Thiamine or Vitamin B is the ingredient in Brewer’s Yeast that’s attributed to flea control, but it also contains other vitamins and nutrients. Fatty acids in Brewer’s Yeast can help promote skin and coat health. If your dog has been suffering irritation due to fleas, Brewer’s Yeast supplements may reduce inflammation and promote healing. It is also credited with reducing shedding and giving dogs a glowing, healthy coat. There are many Brewer’s Yeast dog supplements you can choose from including treats your dog will enjoy.

Garlic and Brewer’s Yeast dog supplements are usually quite affordable as well as effective in treating dog fleas. They do take a few weeks to begin to work, however. To help control fleas in the meantime and even after they seem to have disappeared, be aggressive in cleaning your home and your dog’s bedding area. Wash your dog’s bedding frequently, and vacuum carpets, furniture and curtains several times a week. Bathe your dog weekly with a gentle shampoo and use a flea comb to remove fleas that may occasionally appear.
